Stockton, California has an estimated population of 289,927 making it the 13th most populous city in the state. Stockton is ninety miles inland on the San Francisco Bay. Charles Weber purchased the land after he tried his hand at gold mining. He soon discovered that it would be more profitable to serve the incoming gold miners. The city, incorporated in July of 1850, is the first California city not to be named after a Spanish or Native American word or name origin.
