By the 1850s, the land had become part of America and California was adopted as a state. Santa Clara had become a town with hotels, businesses, a schoolhouse, and a church. Santa Clara College was built in 1851. The town was incorporated in 1852 and was state-chartered in 1862. The town became a major manufacturer, and also seed and fruit producer.

The past of Santa Clara is very different from the present. Santa Clara sits in the heart of the Silicon Valley. It no longer is a major producer of seeds and fruit, but of technology. The city is home to headquarters of Intel, Applied Materials, Sun Microsystems, and many other tech companies.

The city is also in talks with the current San Francisco 49ers football team. The goal is to move the team to Santa Clara. Negotiations were due to be final as of July 2008, but the deadline was pushed back to February of 2009.
