Riverside, California is named for being next to the Santa Ana River. With an estimated population of 296,842 residents, it is the 12th most populous city in California. A man named John North founded Riverside, California in 1870. He and other explorers were looking to expand to a colony where they could focus on education and culture.

The group planted orange trees in 1871, but their citrus economy didn't thrive until a woman named Eliza Tibbets received trees from a friend. The trees were Brazilian navel orange trees. The city continued to prosper with the building of the Mission Inn, a hotel that received guests such as presidents, movie stars, and royalty. Frank Miller, that founded the hotel, left 400 bells that they had collected in the hotel. Richard Nixon was married in what is now the lounge. Still in the hotel is the chair that was especially made for President Taft. He was a large man of 350 pounds and Mr. Miller wanted him to be comfortable. It is now a museum that can be toured by visitors.

Today Riverside continues to thrive. It has many museums and many theaters that host to concerts, symphonies, art exhibits, and ballets. Despite the fact Riverside is ranked as one of the most severely polluted cities, it has a growing population.
