Until sometime in the 1930s, Modesto was known as the "Filth Capital of California." It's reputation of gambling, brothels, and saloons made it a Wild West town.

Modesto has one very notable native, George Lucas. Every June, the town celebrates the movie American Graffiti. They have everything from parades to classic cars. Modesto also has a group of opera players, a ballet, and a symphony orchestra. They also have a few art galleries including the new Mistlin Gallery that supports local artists.
