The King of Spain first owned it. He then sold it to four people, one of which was James Irvine. Irvine then purchased all of the land from the other three investors. In 1886, James Irvine died and left the land to his son, James Irving, Jr. Irving, Jr. turned it into the Irvine Company and it went from a ranch to olive and citrus orchards. And by World War II, there were over 60,000 acres of lima beans.

The Irvine Company continued to thrive and in 1959 the state of California asked for the land to build a university. Permission was granted and the Irvine Company began to plan a city. Around the university, the villages of Turtle Rock, University Park, Culverdale, the Ranch, and Walnut voted to become one. In 1971, the residents of the villages voted and they became Irvine. Irvine is a planned city just like other U.S. cities such as New Haven, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. What makes Irvine different is that it was planned specifically to have safety for the citizens always in mind. At first, each street and part of town was to have its own architectural structure. However, with the growth and population that has proven difficult, but the residents' safety is still top priority.
