The town is located sixty miles northwest of downtown Phoenix and is known for having good country living, clean air, and excellent western hospitality. Along with the rest of the west, Wickenburg became a part of the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. The land known as Wickenburg was first explored in 1860 by a group of white men known as the Gila Rangers. The Rangers came across the land as they were pursuing Indians who were raiding the mail route and miners at Gila City. By 1862 many miners from California and Mexico in search of gold along the Colorado River settled near Wickenburg in present day Yuma.

There were many miners among the settlers of the 1860s, however a man by the name of Henry Wickenburg would become the greatest of them all. Henry Wickenburg discovered the Vulture Mine, which contained approximately thirty million dollars in gold. To this day many mines in the town of Wickenburg have monuments that honor his great discovery.
