Safford is a city located in Graham County, Arizona. The city of Safford is the county seat of Graham County and has an estimated population of 8,932. In 1874 the town was founded by pioneers that came from the Gila Bend after suffering great loss due to floodwaters in 1873. The town was laid out and buildings were constructed by the fall of 1874. The town was named after Anson P.K. Safford, an Arizona Territorial Governor. The town was officially incorporated on October 10, 1901 and later changed to a city in 1955.

The city of Safford is known for its well-established school system, the Safford Unified School District. The city also consists of an agricultural extension of the University of Arizona. Discovery Park, which provides a Hall of Science, a small railway, and a restored Sonoran riparian water feature, is also a well-respected educational resource located in Safford.

In 1907 the Safford volunteer fire department was established and consisted of a fire chief and seven residents. The volunteer fire department has continued to serve the city and currently consists of a fire chief and twenty-seven residents. The department receives more than two hundred emergency calls per year.
