Payson, Arizona is home to an estimated 15,257 residents as of 2006. Payson was founded in 1882, which at the time was known as Green Valley or Union Park. The town's first post office was established in 1884. The Postmaster suggested that the town be named after Louis Edwin Payson, a senator who was instrumental in the establishment of the post office.

Payson was the site of Bootleg Alley during the time of prohibition. The manufacturing, sale, and distribution were thriving in town of Payson. In the 1930s, the town began to build a road to improve the four to five hour commute to Phoenix. The project was completed in 1959. This road is now knows as the Beeline Highway or State Route 87 and has recently been expanded to four lanes.

Today, Payson has five major schools including three grammar schools, one middle school, and one high school. The area is popular for rock hunters. In the area around Payson, one can find quartz crystals rivaling diamonds in quality, geodes, onyx, and agate.

For recreation, residents and visitors can go to the Mazatzal Casino, an Indian casino. Ninety-seven percent of the land in Payson is operated under the jurisdiction of the United States Forest Service. There are many outdoor activities to do in Payson including hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Payson is also home to the Arizona State Championship Old Time Fiddlers Contest.

Kenny Evans serves as the town's Mayor along with Vice Mayor Tim Fruth, and Council Members Ed Blair, Su Connell, Andy Romance, John Wilson, and Mike Vogel.
