Fountain Hills, Arizona is home to the fourth tallest fountain in the world. Built in 1971 by Robert p. McCulloch, it was built at the same time as the London Bridge located in Lake Havasu City. The fountain sprays for about 15 minutes every hour with three pumps at 600 horsepower. The water towers over 560 feet in the air and was the tallest fountain for more than a decade. The walking path surrounding the fountain is 1.25 miles long.
The town does not have its own law enforcement. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Department patrols the town. Fountain Hills, Arizona is governed by a Council-Manager system with the current Mayor Jay Schlum who was elected in March of 2008. There are six council members who serve with him. They are Vice Mayor Henry Leger, and Councilmembers Keith McMahan, Mike Archambault, Dennis Contino, Ginny Dickey and Cassie Hansen.
Fountain Hills started as a master planned development of Scottsdale. It incorporated into its own in 1989.
There are five parks in Fountain Hills, Arizona. They are Fountain Park, Golden Eagle Park, Four Peaks Park, Desert Vista Neighborhood Park, and the Preserve. Each park offers something different to residents. Fountain Park has a splash pad and a disc golf course. Golden Eagle Park and Four Peaks Park has picnic ramadas. Desert Vista Neighborhood Park has a skate park. And the Preserve has many trails and offers guided hikes.
The recorded population of Fountain Hills was 25,316 in July of 2007 with almost 95% of its residents being white non-hispanic.
