Douglas, Arizona is home to an estimated 17,016 residents as of 2006. The town is named after James Douglas, a mining pioneer. The town was founded as a smelter town to serve nearby Bisbee, Arizona. The Calumet and Arizona Company Smelter was started in 1902. The Copper Queen operated from 1904 to 1931. The town of Douglas was the site for the Arizona Copper Mine Strike in 1983. The Phelps Dodge Corporation had taken over the Calumet and Arizona Company and in 1982; they announced that they were going to lay off over 3,000 workers prompting a strike. The strike ended in 1986.
Dr. Michael Gomez serves as Mayor of Douglas. He serves with Margaret Morales, Mitch Lindemann, Bob Fernandez, Ray Shelton, Ivan Huish, and Jose Luiz Acedo.
A very popular historic site in Douglas, Arizona is the Gadsden Hotel. The hotel opened in 1907. It was named for the Gadsden Purchase. A fire burned it down in 1929. It is said to be haunted by Pancho Villa. He is mostly in the basement and said to be wearing a black suit and is without a head.
Agua Prieta is considered Douglas's sister city. It is located across the border in Mexico. It contributes to the commercial development of Douglas.
The population of Douglas is 86% Hispanic. Almost 55% of the population, ages 25 and older, have a high school diploma, while almost 10% have a Bachelor's degree. In the past three years, Douglas has had less than the average amount of crime compared to other U.S. cities of its size. The majority of crimes are thefts. For every 100,000 people, there were 3,040 thefts in 2006.
