The Calumet and Arizona Company Smelter was started in 1902. The Copper Queen operated from 1904 to 1931. The town of Douglas was the site for the Arizona Copper Mine Strike in 1983. The Phelps Dodge Corporation had taken over the Calumet and Arizona Company and in 1982; they announced that they were going to lay off over 3,000 workers prompting a strike. The strike ended in 1986.

A very popular historic site in Douglas, Arizona is the Gadsden Hotel. The hotel opened in 1907. It was named for the Gadsden Purchase. A fire burned it down in 1929. It is said to be haunted by Pancho Villa. He is mostly in the basement and said to be wearing a black suit and is without a head.
Agua Prieta is considered Douglas's sister city. It is located across the border in Mexico. It contributes to the commercial development of Douglas.
